Many Asian/South Asian weddings are extended, elaborate affairs that often span a variety of days. They are generally filled with a whole lot of tradition and culture, which in turn stems from simple fact that marriage is not just about joining two people together yet also the blending of families. While many couples today like to go the more Western path by incorporating a few of these traditions or perhaps ditching all of them completely, there are some who wish to stick with these types of traditional traditions and remember their wedding the way they’ve already always carried out.

During the past, it was common for Guo Da Li to be organised a few days or even weeks before the real wedding day as there are several superstitions that require the Guo Da Li ceremony to happen on an auspicious date and period. During this time, the groom’s family group would visit the bride’s home to meet her and exchange products. These can include the couple’s dowry, personal products for the bride, a tea established, and golden/jade dragon and phoenix bangles for the new bride (Si Dian Jin).

It’s important to notice that it is taboo with respect to the star of the wedding to look back at her house on her approach to the groom’s place as this is considered a sign of failure in the marital life. This is why only single bridesmaids will compliment the woman to her husband’s home, while all others including groomsmen will stay behind and only appear once the couple has inserted his house.

When the bridal procession arrives at the groom’s house, the new tradition intended for him great parents to welcome the bride which has a “heng yuan” toast. This is a special toast that is a symbol of the wish for the couple to have happily and prosperously, too as wishing them to be blessed with abundant kids. The couple will also get a gift basket from the groom’s parents. The items of this is determined by the origin with their family but it may incorporate red days and that lotus seeds tea (Lian Zi Hong Zao Cha) just for longevity, and a pair of blessed bamboo sections (Long Yan Hong Zhuo) intended for wealth.

After the heng yuan bread toasted, the groom’s family will prepare and serve a luxurious eight-course fête for their new daughter-in-law. These kinds of dishes usually include a fish program for selection, suckling pig for luck, chicken or perhaps duck for peace and unanimity, and a sweet that lotus seed dessert meant for fertility. Guests are afterward encouraged to give the newlyweds a round of applause (yam seng) at the end belonging to the dinner to be a show of passion for welcoming them into their household.
